BEIJING, Sep. 6 (Xinhuanet)-- Powerful Typhoon Nabi pummeled south-western Japan with torrential rain and high winds, leaving one person dead and another missing, according to AFP report.

At least nine people were injured on Japan's southern main island of Kyushu and the island chain of Okinawa, police said.

Nabi, meaning butterfly in Korean and packing winds of up to 144 kilometers (89 miles) per hour, was located near Makurazaki City on Kyushu's southern tip at 8.00 am (2300 GMT Monday), the Meteorological Agency said.

Television showed roads deep under water in the city of Kagoshima and waves engulfing coastal roads on the island, which has a mixture of heavy industry and agriculture.

More than 70,000 people were being advised to evacuate from the city of Nobeoka in Oita prefecture for fear that nearby rivers might burst their banks, public broadcaster NHK said.

Hundreds of flights in and out of Kyushu and the neighbouring island of Shikoku were cancelled because of the high winds, as were high-speed "bullet" train services in western Japan. Enditem
