German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder addresses a Social Democratic Party congress in Berlin. Schroeder issued a defiant call to battle at the party congress ahead of a general election they are almost certain to lose.

BERLIN, Aug. 31 (Xinhuanet) -- German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder vowed on Wednesday to fight to the end for the Sept. 18 general elections although his Social Democratic Party (SPD) was left far behind in polls.

    "Nothing has been decided yet. The election will also be decided in the final days," Schroeder told his party congress, a response to a double-digit gap between SPD and the conservative Christian Democratic alliance (CDU/CSU).

    Schroeder blasted CDU/CSU led by chancellor candidate Angela Merkel for dismantling the social welfare system. "The society they want is cold, it lacks solidarity and it's inhuman," said Schroeder.

    The CDU/CSU and its Free Democratic ally gained 51.3 percent votes, while the SPD and the Greens tallied 35.8 percent, according to the Allensbach poll. Enditem
