Suspected Taliban operative killed in Afghanistan: US military

KABUL, Aug. 31 (Xinhuanet) -- Afghan and US troops in a joint operation eliminated one suspected Taliban operative, wounded two and captured another from Logar province 30 km south of the capital in the weekend, a press release of the US-led coalition said Wednesday.

"Afghan forces and paratroopers from the first battalion, 325 Infantry Regiment, killed one enemy, wounded two and captured another during an attack in Logar province Aug. 28," the press release added.

According to the press release, one vehicle of the coalition was slightly damaged during the operation.

"Approximately seven enemy combatants initiated the attack with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire directed at the coalition patrol traveling on the main road leading from Kabul to Logar's provincial capital Pul-e-Alam," noted the news release.

There were no casualties on Afghan and coalition troops, the statement emphasized.

Taliban militants who have been active since 2002 in the mountainous south and east region have begun focusing their attacks on Afghan and US military interests in areas close to the capital.

The movement on Saturday attacked US military convoy in Sarobi 60 km east of the capital wounding three American soldiers.

Over 1,000, mostly militants, have been killed in the Taliban-led insurgency since the beginning of this year. Enditem
