Lebanon on Tuesday arrested three former security chiefs over the murder of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri

Jamil al-Sayed (L), Raymond Azar (C) and Ali al-Hage (R)

BEIRUT, Aug. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Lebanon on Tuesday arrested three former security chiefs over the murder of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, security sources said.

Former general security chief Jamil al-Sayed, former military intelligence chief Raymond Azar and former internal security chief Ali al-Hage were arrested.

Meanwhile, Mustafa Hamdan, head of the presidential guard, turned himself in to the office of a UN investigation team after the Lebanese authorities issued an arrest warrant against him.

Hamdan was questioned and his office searched by the UN team in June.

The moves were seen as the first major development in the investigation into Hariri's killing.

Many Lebanese blame Syria and its ally in Lebanon for a role in the February murder.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has pledged full cooperation with the United Nations over the assassination of Hariri, asserting that Syrian secret services were not involved in the incident. Enditem
