Indonesian prominent Muslim scholar Madjid dies

    JAKARTA, Aug. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Indonesia's Muslim scholar Nurcholish Madjid passed away at the age of 66 here on Monday due to liver and kidney dysfunction at the Pondok Indah Hospital.

    The scholar, whose thoughts have coloured the political and social life of Indonesia for decades, died at 14:05 local time.

    "We all expressed condolence on the death, in the soul of Cak Nur (Nurcholish Madjid) it comes together status of a religious leader, nation leader, nationalist leader and pluralist leader andalso thinker," Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla said.

    "His death does not mean the lose of statesmanship, it will create emergence of other statesman, who really cares about the future of his country," said Chairman of Indonesian Consultative Council Hidayat Nurwahid.

    Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono also extended his condolences to Nurcholish's family and expressed deep grief over the nation's loss of an important figure.

    Madjid, a rector at the Islamic University of Paramadina, had been in critical condition for the last several days, after undergoing a liver transplant in China. He then suffered from liver and kidney failure and died. Enditem
