Six killed as Mumbai building collapses
www.chinaview.cn 2005-08-29 13:56:49

NEW DELHI, Aug. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- A three-storey building collapsed in India's financial hub early Monday, killing at least six people barely a week after the collapse of a residential apartment that killed 11, according to Indo-Asian News Service.

Over 10 people were injured in the collapse of the building at around 1 a.m. in south Mumbai's Marine Lines neighborhood, said police officers. All the injured have been hospitalized.

Mumbai Police and civic agencies launched a massive rescue operation to look for possible survivors soon after the collapse of the building. Authorities say at least 15 people have been rescued from under the debris.

Every year many of this city's dilapidated buildings collapse during the rains due to poor construction.

Eleven people were killed and several injured after a four-storey building collapsed in south-central Mumbai on Aug. 23. The collapse of the building, which was 125 years old, was notified as dangerous by the civic authorities.

There are over 19,000 old and dilapidated buildings in this city of over 15 million people. Of them, some are between 70 and 80 years old while some are over 100 years old. Enditem
