Mideast conference set for September
www.chinaview.cn 2005-08-26 10:04:25

BEIJING, Aug. 26 -- Russian and Palestinian foreign ministers held talks in Moscow on Thursday, less than 36 hours after Israel completed its eviction of Jewish settlers from the Gaza strip and parts of the occupied West Bank.

Meanwhile, tensions rose after five Palestinians were killed in an Israeli army raid in the West Bank.

Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said more talks are needed to carry on to push forward the peace process. He said a meeting of the Middle East Quartet in New York would be held on September 20th. The conference will focus on issues such as the future status of a Palestinian state.

Lavrov said, "We are united in the understanding of the necessity to carry on negotiating for the complete fulfillment of the road map obligations."

Meanwhile, in the West Bank there was anger of the killing five Palestinians during an Israeli army raid in Tulkarem on Wednesday. Israelis and Palestinians both blame each other for firing the first shots. The deaths prompted threats of revenge from militants, and condemnation from the Palestinian government.

Ahmed Qurai, Palestinian Prime Minister, said, "This crime is another crime to be included along with the building of the wall and the settlement expansion around Jerusalem."

The latest deaths came just one day after Israel completed the removal of 9,000 Israelis from twenty-five settlements in its disengagement project. The fragile truce is now, again, in danger of collapsing.
