BRUSSELS, Aug. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Dutch textile traders accused the European Commission (EC) of imposing limits "hastily" on Chinese textile imports, Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant reported on Wednesday.
The executive of the European Union (EU) did not act correctly when imposing trade restrictions on textiles from China, according to Dutch trade organizations EVO (transporters), Modint (clothing)and VIVO (importers of textile from the Far East).
The newspaper said this viewpoint is shared by clothing chain Hennes & Mauritz, department store HEMA and Mitex, the representatives of retailers affiliated with the association of small and medium-sized enterprises MKB-Nederland.
The organizations are instituting a test case in an effort to gain access to the shipments of clothing they have ordered and paid for but are now lying unused at the customs depots.
The trade organizations argued that the EC should have made transitional arrangements, and added that they are opposed to the retroactive effects of the quotas.
They said that there is no truth in the argument that cheaper clothing from China would pose a threat to the European textile trade.
Since trade with China was liberalized at the beginning of thisyear, imports to Europe have gone up 3 percent. However, the Dutchimport of clothing dropped by 6 percent, according to EVO, Modint and VIVO. Enditem
