DAR ES SALAAM, Aug. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- The sixth
session of the Inter-Sudanese Peace Talks on the conflict in Darfur will be
convened in Abuja of Nigeria on September 15, according to the talks chief
mediator on Wednesday.
Salim Ahmed Salim, the chief mediator and former secretary-general of the then Organization
of African Unity, told the press in Dar es Salaam that the new date had been
agreed upon by representatives from the three concerned parties -- the
government of Sudan, the Justice and Equality Movement and the Sudan Liberation
Movement/Army.
The sixth round of talks was originally slated for
Wednesday but had to be postponed due to a series of events including the sudden
death of John Garang, according to Salim who now chairs the Mwalimu Nyerere
Foundation of Tanzania.
Negotiations on such substantive issues as power
sharing, wealth sharing and security arrangements will be preceded by workshops
for participants.
The African Union appeals to all concerned parties,
the facilitators and observers to ensure effective participation at the highest
level in the re-scheduled talks in order to facilitate a speedy resolution of
the conflict in Darfur.
When asked whether an agreement could be reached
before the end of this year, Salim said that the African Union and other parties
concerned have been making their efforts toward this end.
Representatives from the Sudanese government, the
Justice and Equality Movement and the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army had
gathered in Bagamoyo of Tanzania for three days of consultation, according to
the chief mediator. Enditem |
