MACAO, Aug. 23 (Xinhuanet) -- Macao has resumed the import of live and frozen fish from the Chinese mainland following a temporary suspension imposed on Saturday, local media reported Tuesday.
A Macao Post Daily report said the suspension was lifted Monday when a total of four metric tons of fish entered the region.
The amount, however, accounts for merely around 10 percent of Macao's previous daily need, according to the newspaper.
It quoted Cheong Kuok Chu, president of the Fresh Fish Merchants Association of Macao, as saying that the fish imports are expected to return to the normal level "within this week."
The mainland temporarily halted the fish supply to adjust its veterinary inspection and quarantine rules in the wake of the discovery of carcinogenic malachite green in imported eels in HongKong.
Some 80 percent of Macao's live and frozen fish are supplied by Zhuhai and Zhongshan in the mainland, according to statistics released by the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau. Enditem |
