Flash flooding wreaks havoc in Slovenia
www.chinaview.cn 2005-08-21 04:40:47

BELGRADE, Serbia-Montenegro, Aug. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- Heavy overnight rain has triggered flash flooding in parts of Slovenia, wreaking havoc in transport and causing extensive damage, but there were no reports of casualties, the Slovene Press Agency reported on Sunday.

The hardest hit is the east of the country, particularly the area around Slovenia's third-largest city Celje and the area around the southeast town of Krsko, the Civil Protection and Disaster Relief Administration was quoted as saying.

A number of roads have been closed around Celje due to the flooding and subsequent mudslides. Two road bridges have been washed away near Zalec, some 10 kilometers south of Celje. The army has been asked for assistance in putting up pontoon bridges.

Dozens of houses have also been flooded around Celje, Krsko andSevnica. Civil protection teams and firefighters have been mobilized to help in the clean up efforts.

According to initial assessments, the total damage would go into tens of millions of US dollars.

Forecasters have warned that more heavy rain could fall in the next 36 hours and more flooding is expected. Enditem
