TOKYO, Aug. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale
jolted northeastern Niigata Prefecture on Sunday, causing minor injures and
damage.
The quake occurred at 11:29 a.m. (0229 GMT) with the epicenter in the
prefecture's Chuetsu region, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The earthquake also registered upper 5 on Japan's 7-level seismic intensity
scale. No tsunami warning was issued.
At least two people suffered minor injuries to their arms from a broken
window, Japanese media reported.
A series of earthquakes with the largest of M6.8 and upper 6 inintensity
hit the prefecture last October, killing 40 people, of whom half died from
collateral damage such as shock.
The local bullet train service was briefly shut down, the East Japan
Railway Co. said.
Tokyo Electric Power Co. said it has not found any irregularities in its nuclear power plant in the prefecture, and the plant continues to work as normal. Enditem |
