M5.0 earthquake hits northeastern Japan

    TOKYO, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale hit northeast Japan's Niigata Prefecture Sunday.

    The 11:29 a.m. (0229 GMT) quake measured upper 5 on the Japanese intensity scale of 7, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. No tsunami warning was issued.

    There has been no death or damage from the quake reported so far. Enditem
