JAKARTA, Aug. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- The Indonesian government will soon free the remaining 1,500 members of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) who have been serving prison terms, a senior official said here Friday.
"There were around 2,000 GAM members in prisons, but the number decreased to some 1,500 due to remission," Minister of Justice and Human Right Affairs Hamid Awaluddin told reporters.
Under the peace accord signed between the government and GAM in Helsinki Monday, the government must release all prisoners related with GAM in less than 15 days.
The amnesty will be brought into further discussion next Wednesday because the government must consult first with the House of Representatives before granting amnesty, said Hamid, who signed the Helsinki agreement on behalf of the government.
Hamid said the government will fully restore the right of political prisoners related with GAM activities. Enditem |
