Most Taiwanese doubt election probe result: poll
www.chinaview.cn 2005-08-18 21:08:34

BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- Only 19 percent of the respondents of a public opinion toll carried out by a local newspaper believe the conclusion made by Taiwanese investigators in a probe into last year's election-eve shooting.

According investigators, the "March 19 shooting incident" was not directed and staged by the campaigners, incumbent leaders Chen Shui-bian and Lu Hsiu-lien, themselves.

About 40 percent of the respondents said they do not accept the decision. 41 percent remained silent.

More than 90 percent of the respondents from the Pan-blue alliance said they won't accept the conclusions.

Local media also conducted another poll to see if people would accept the investigation's conclusion, which says that since suspect Chen Yi-hsiung is dead and the whole case is not one masterminded by the electees, there investigation may end with no one being prosecuted.

Some 23 percent of the respondents said they don't believe that conclusion very much; 17 percent don't believe it at all; 40 percent say they can't ever accept it.

Before the polls, the two major political parties in Taiwan, the Kuomintang and the People First Party, described the conclusion as "very absurd and hasty" and vowed to keep working to unearth the truth.

Parliament members of the two parties also said they cannot accept the probe's hasty conclusion and would push for the formation of a second special investigation committee.

The opposition protested against the election outcome, claiming the shooting was a conspiracy to gain sympathy votes and boost the chances for Chen's re-election.

Son of Chen Yi-hsiung said his father absolutely has nothing to do with the case.

"Although my father has been named as the sole suspect, there is no direct evidence to prove he did it," he said.

The suspect was found drowned near Tainan on March 29 and his body was cremated a day later. The cause of death listed as accidental drowning.

However, media reports have questioned the official version of events, including why Chen's body was found wrapped in a fishing net and why the gun used in the shooting has not been found. Enditem
