Madrid bombings suspect arrested in Serbia
www.chinaview.cn 2005-08-18 03:55:52

BELGRADE, Aug. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- A key suspect involved in the Madrid bombings last year has been arrested in Belgrade, Serbian Ministry of Interior confirmed on Wednesday.

Moroccan national Abdelmajid Bouchar, 22-year-old, was arrested Tuesday night during routine traveler checks on a train, said a ministry statement, adding that he was charged for breaches of immigration laws and carrying false Iraqi documents by the nameof Midhat Salah.

Bouchar was held in custody in the Belgrade suburb of Padinska Skela, where an Interpol fingerprint check revealed that he was wanted in connection with the Madrid bombings.

Earlier on Wednesday, the arrest was announced by the Spanish Interior Ministry, which was seeking an urgent extradition of Bouchar.

Spanish authorities said that Bouchar escaped from an extensive manhunt while his seven fellow suspects blew themselves up with a batch of the same dynamite used in the Madrid commuter trains bombings on March 11, 2004.

The Madrid train bombings, which killed 191 people and wounded 1,500 people, were claimed by Islamic militants who called the bombings revenge for Spain's sending troops to Iraq and Afghanistan. Enditem
