A private television channel NTV in its bulletin at 2 p.m. local time (0800 GMT) said 350 bombs of time devises were detonated almost simultaneously. Many unexploded bombs were recovered by security forces.

So far no group has claimed responsibility for the bombing attacks across the country, but another private television channel ATN Bangla showed a leaflet found with an arrested man of an Islamic group.

State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar said: "The bombing was well planned. It was not an isolated incident".

He said security forces have been deployed on the streets. Check posts have been set up in many places and they are checking suspected people.

"I have asked all officers of the police force to go to the streets and find out the persons behind the bombings," Babar said.

Tension was high across Bangladesh after the bombings that occurred between 10:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in the morning.

Babar said 23 people suspected with the bombings have been arrested so far.

In the capital, bombs exploded at the Zia International Airport, National Press Club, High Court, Farmgate, most of them busy city area and on the campus of Dhaka University.

Babar said they are holding a meeting with high security personnel, including Bangladesh armed forces. "We are considering ways of handling the large scale bombings," he told NTV.

Police said the unexploded bombs were time devises. "We will examine further."

The bombs exploded with loud bang creating panic among the people nearby, the report added. Enditem
