OTTAWA, Aug. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- A Canadian citizen adducted two weeks ago was killed by kidnappers in Iraq, officials said Monday.
Zaid Meerwali, who had dual Canadian-Iraqi citizenship, was abducted on Aug. 2.
Prime Minister Paul Martin issued a statement Monday to express condolences to Meerwali's family and also condemn the kidnappers.
He also warned Canadians against traveling to Iraq. "Any Canadians in Iraq should leave," he said. "The situation remains volatile and the government of Canada cannot provide consular assistance to Canadian citizens in distress."
Canada has yet to open an embassy in Iraq.
Canadian officials said they got the news from Meerwali's family. His brother said Meerwali returned to Iraq several months ago to pursue a business venture. The motive behind his abduction was unclear.
About 200 foreigners, including journalists and humanitarian workers, have been kidnapped in Iraq, at least four of whom are Canadians. Enditem |
