Aceh peace agreement signed

The peace agreement, which was signed here on Monday by the Indonesian government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), vows to end the decades of hostilities between the two sides in the Indonesian province of Aceh.

    HELSINKI, Aug. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- The Indonesian government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) signed here on Monday morning the formal peace agreement, ending decades of conflicts in Indonesia's Aceh province and hostility between the two sides.

    Indonesian Justice Minister Hamid Awaluddin, who represents theIndonesian government, and Malik Mahmud, who represents the GAM, signed the pact at the Government Banquet Hall in Helsinki.

    Former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari, who has led the negotiations between the two sides, witnessed the signing process.
