4 US soldiers killed, 6 wounded in northern Iraq

    BAGHDAD, Aug. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Four US soldiers were killed and six others wounded in an attack on their patrol near the northern city of Baiji, the US military said on Wednesday.

    The attack took place at around 11:30 p.m. (1930 GMT) on Tuesdaynear the oil refining city of Baiji, some 200 km north of Baghdad,

    the military said in a statement.

    The ten soldiers, assigned to Task Force Liberty, were evacuatedto a coalition medical facility, said the statement.

    The names of the killed soldiers were being withheld pending notification of next of kin, it added.

    An Iraqi police source in the nearby Tikrit city said that insurgents struck the US patrol with several roadside bombs on a road in al-Mazraa area near Baiji before they attacked them with rocket-propelled grenades and gunfire.

    Two US Humvees and a larger armored vehicle were destroyed in the attack, the sources told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

    About 1,830 US soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the US-led invasion in March 2003, according to latest Pentagon statistics. Enditem
