BEIJING, Aug. 10 -- An Egyptian chemist released Tuesday after three weeks in custody for questioning about links to the July 7 transport system bombings in London says he knew two of the attackers casually.
After his release, 33-year-old Magdy el-Nasha, told reporters outside his home that he had nothing to do with the bombings that killed at least 56 people on three London subway trains and a bus.
"Only my knowledge and all my study is something to do with the environment, something to do with the green area, I am doing something to help people with technology with drugs and foods. Nothing to do with explosions or such." el-Nashar said.
El-Nashar had been studying at the University of Leeds in Britain.
He was detained in Cairo after Britain notified Egyptian authorities they suspected he may have had links to some of the terrorists, three of whom were from Leeds.
El-Nashar explained that he met one of the suicide bombers, Jamaican-born Lindsey Germaine, in Leeds during the last Muslim month of fasting, Ramadan, which was in October and November.
An Egyptian Interior Ministry' official said el-Nashar was released after authorities found no evidence against him and no links to the bombings or to al-Qaida.
