VIENNA, Aug. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- The governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN nuclear watchdog, started an emergency meeting on Tuesday after Iran resumed work at a uranium conversion plant.
The board will discuss an adjusted draft resolution by the European Union (EU), which warns Tehran not to resume its uranium processing and enrichment program.
Iran on Monday afternoon resumed work at the uranium conversion facilities in the central city Isfahan as soon as the IAEA inspectors finished installing surveillance equipment on the facilities.
The IAEA then confirmed Iran had restarted some nuclear activities and expressed regret about its decision.
Iran's official IRNA news agency reported on Tuesday that the EU would change the text with "more severe" terms of a draft resolution it had presented to IAEA on Iran's nuclear programs.
"The EU announced the decision of change following receiving the latest news on Iran's move in fully resuming activities at Isfahan uranium conversion plant," an Iranian diplomat in Vienna was quoted as saying.
According to the diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Europeans had asked Iran to keep suspension of its uranium enrichment activities in the previous text presented to the Vienna-based UN nuclear watchdog earlier in the day.
"The Western countries, under US pressure, are determined to change the text of that proposed draft to some extent to make its match their previously adopted stands following announcement of Iran's decision to resume nuclear activities in Isfahan," said the diplomat.
The EU trio of Britain, France and Germany, the longtime broker of the Iranian nuclear issue, is expected to present the final draft of its resolution to the meeting.
If Iran fails to respond to the warning, the matter will eventually be referred to the UN Security Council, which could impose economic sanctions, European diplomats said.
However, they said Europe still wants to give Tehran the last chance to return to suspension of its nuclear activities. Enditem |
