GENEVA, Aug. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said Tuesday that it has suspended field operations in the Gaza Strip for security reasons.
Nada Doumani, spokeswoman of the Geneva-based aid agency, said the decision came after an ICRC office in Khan Younis in southern Gaza came under attack on Sunday night and three UN employees were abducted by gunmen in the Khan Younis refugee camp on Monday.
It was the first time that the ICRC office in Gaza was attacked by militants, Doumani said, adding that the organization would resume its field operations there after clarification of the event.
The Palestinian police Monday stormed the hideout of the militants in Gaza and freed the three UN hostages. No hostages were hurt but two civilians were wounded in the raid, medical sources said. Enditem |
