Urgent: Annan waives immunity of UN official accused of taking bribes

    UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan waived on Monday the immunity of a UN procurement officer accused of taking bribes by an independent investigating panel, Annan's chief of staff said.

    Mark Malloc Brown told reporters that Annan waived the immunity of Alexander Yakovlev, the UN procurement officer accused of taking more than 950,000 US dollars in bribes from contractors, at the request of the US Attorney for the Southern District. Enditem
