Typhoon Matsa kills 3, injuring 2 in Shanghai

    SHANGHAI, Aug. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Typhoon Matsa killed three people and injured two others in Shanghai and caused direct economic losses totaling 100 million yuan (12 million US dollars), said the municipal flood control and prevention headquarters Monday.

    Matsa struck the city between Saturday night and Sunday morning, bringing high winds and torrential rains to the city.

    Latest statistics showed that three people were killed and two others injured as the direct casualties from the typhoon. In addition, as indirect casualties another four people were killed by electric shock when the typhoon broke electricity lines.

    The typhoon had flooded 20,000 houses, uprooted 2,700 trees and destroyed 400 high-tension power lines.

    Moreover, the typhoon forced about 1,000 flights cancelled, affecting 100,000 passengers.

    Matsa subsided and left Shanghai Sunday morning. And traffic and production have resumed in the typhoon-afflicted city. Enditem
