Britain arrests suspected militant on US warrant

     LONDON, Aug. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- British police on Sunday arrested a suspected militant on a US extradition warrant.

    Haroon Rashid Aswad, 30, a British citizen, was arrested at Northolt military airbase in northwest London after being deportedfrom Zambia.

    The US warrant accuses Aswad of conspiring with others between Oct. 1999 and April 2000 to set up a militant camp in the state ofOregon to train and equip people to fight in Afghanistan.

    "He was arrested under a provisional extradition warrant issuedby (London's) Bow Street Magistrates Court on behalf of the US authorities early on Sunday," a police statement said.

    Aswad was arrested on July 20 in Zambia. He is due to appear ina London court on Monday. Enditem
