JERUSALEM, Aug. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said Saturday he would consider using administrative detention measures against Jewish extremists who are trying to derail Israeli planned Gaza pullout.
Mofaz said that following Thursday's killing of four Israeli Arabs on bus by a Jewish ultra-rightist army deserter he would consider detention without trial for any individual whom security services recommended should be put behind bars.
"We will consider ... administrative detention of all those proposed by the Shin Bet (Israel's internal security service),"Mofaz told the local TV Channel Two's "Meet the Press.
Mofaz said he could not put an exact figure on the number of people who could be locked up. Administrative detention is a measure commonly used against Palestinians but very rarely used against Israeli Jews.
"Israel is facing one of its most difficult moments, an historicmoment but to my mind this is a real test for the rule of law, and goes even beyond the success of the disengagement plan," Mofaz stressed.
Earlier Saturday, Interior Minister Ophir Pines-Paz said that he will propose establishing a governmental panel, headed by a judge, to investigate the circumstances of the shooting attack in the Arab town of Shfaram and prevent future incidents.
Vice Prime Minister Ehud Olmert also visited the bereaved families, saying that he was amazed by the responsible and restrained manner that the Arab public displayed after the attack.
Some analysts said that the government led by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will take measure to calm the case one week before the implementation of the pullout from the Gaza Strip and part of northern West Bank.
Sharon called all Arab members of the Knesset on Friday, saying that he had ordered security forces to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. Enditem
