PARIS, Aug. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy said
Friday the international community must be "very firm" towards Teheran if it
resumes sensitive nuclear activities at the risk of triggering a "major
international crisis."
"If they decided in the end to resume their nuclear activities, we'll ask an extraordinary
meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'s board of
governors to ask the whole of the international community to tell Iran one last
time that it has to choose the path of reason," Douste-Blazy told France 2 television,
"We must be very firm over this issue."
The statement was made after the European tro-- France, Germanyand Great
Britain-- handed over to Teheran the cooperation proposals earlier the day to
dissuade Iran to resume uranium conversion work.
An extraordinary meeting of the IAEA's board of governors is scheduled for
next Tuesday to discuss Iran's threats to resume uranium ore conversion in
violation of an agreement signed last year to suspend all nuclear activities in
exchange for the offers made Friday.
"If Iran ends up not accepting (the proposals) then the matter will have to
go to the (United Nations) Security Council and that could effectively be the
start of a major international crisis," he added.
According to the French Foreign Ministry's spokeswoman Cecile Pozzo di Borgo,
the propositions offered by the Europeans were made "so as to take into account
the points raised by the Iranians during the negotiations."
She said they covered the areas of politics and security, the Iranian
civilian nuclear program, and economic and technological cooperation.
"A high-level committee will be tasked" with following the issues of
cooperation in non-proliferation, regional security, terrorism and combating
drug-trafficking, she said.
Iran will also have access to civilian nuclear technology within the
framework of international bids, according to the propositions.
Iran "can have continued access to the international nuclear energy market
and benefit from cooperation in this area. The Europeans guarantee the durable
supply to Iran of nuclear fuel forits power stations," she said.
In addition, Europe "is disposed to consider Iran as a long-term source of
energy supply."
The European Union also pledges to promote trade, investment and technology
transfers, to work towards an EU-Iran trade and cooperation agreement, and "to
provide political support for Iran's accession to the World Trade Organisation."
Tehran said it would study the proposal and make decision in two days. Iran
has threatened to resume the suspended uranium conversion activities to press
the EU to deliver the proposal on time. Enditem
