TEHRAN, Aug. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- A powerful senior Iranian mullah said Friday that the European Union (EU) had never been truthful in the nuclear talks with Iran, the official IRNA news agency reported.
"As we had said from the very beginning, Europe has not been truthful in the (nuclear) negotiations," Ahmad Jannati, chairman of Iran's hardline top legislation supervisory body Guardian Council, was quoted as saying in a sermon.
Jannati said that Europe had never been frank in dealing with Eastern countries, since "it regarded itself as the master, and the East as its servant."
"It was clear from the very beginning that Iran's negotiations with EU 3 (Britain, France and Germany) would lead nowhere. If Iran yielded to holding talks with them, it was aimed at not lettingthem say that Iran does not cooperate and has nothing logical to say," Jannati stressed.
Jannati reiterated that Iran would never give up its right to get peaceful nuclear technology, adding that Tehran had been on the way to securing its legal rights with the preparation for resuming uranium conversion activities.
"If you (EU and the United States) have intended to bribe Iranby giving whatever concessions you might have in mind to urge us to abandon our natural right, I hereby announce that the Iranian government and nation would under no circumstances abandon their natural right," he said.
"Iran has made up its mind and whatever the United States and Europe would do (to take actions against Iran) would be against their own benefits," Jannati added.
Jannati's comments came as the European trio just submitted acomprehensive proposal aimed to solve the Iranian nuclear standoff and urged Iran to accept, which the EU promised to present in two months in late May.
Tehran said it would study the proposal and make decision in two days. Iran has threatened to resume the suspended uranium conversion activities to press the EU to deliver the proposal ontime.
The EU, the longtime broker of the Iranian nuclear issue, warnedthat the unilateral measure would breach the negotiations, which meant that Iran's nuclear case could be referred to the UN Security Council.
The United States has accused Iran of developing nuclear weapons under the disguise of civil usage. But Tehran has rejected the accusation and insisted that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. Enditem
