Thousands pay final respects to John Garang
www.chinaview.cn 2005-08-05 10:27:05

BEIJING, Aug. 5 -- Sudan's capital of Khartoum and its suburbs are quiet after three days of riots. The clashes reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 130 people. Meanwhile, thousands of distraught and disbelieving Sudanese flocked to see their former leader John Garang, whose body was transported by plane around the vast region for a final farewell.

The former leader's body was flown from New Site, the small settlement where leaders of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement gathered to pay their last respects and discuss their future. Garang's body was then flown to Rumbek before Saturday's funeral in Juba, the regional capital. The SPLM want an inquiry into Garang's death but do not suspect foul play. Garang led the SPLM in a bitter struggle with the Islamist Khartoum-based government for 21 years. That's before signing the peace deal earlier this year to end Africa's then longest-running civil war.
