LIMA, Aug. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Bolivian parliamentarians Sandro Giordano and Norah Soruco were elected Thursday as presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies respectively, according to reports from Bolivia's capital La Paz.
Giordano, of the conservative Nationalist Revolutionary Movement, replaces Senate president Hormando Vaca Diez, with the unanimous support all 27 members of the Senate.
Soruco takes over the leadership of the Chamber of Deputies from Mario Cossio. Cossio plans to run for the governorship of theTarija department in the Dec. 4 general elections.
Giordano highlighted the parliament's good work during the political crisis in May and June, which led to the resignation of ex-President Carlos Mesa and the appointment on June 9 of Eduardo Rodriguez as the new president.
"We must acknowledge that this power had the ability to avoid the confrontation between Bolivians and conserve democracy, which is the best thing we have," Giordano said.
In the recent crisis, Vaca Diez and Cossio gave up their rights to take up the presidency in order to allow Rodriguez to become the new president. Enditem
