OTTAWA, Aug. 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Michaelle Jean, an award-winning journalist who immigrated to Quebec as a child, will be the new Governor-General of Canada.

Prime Minister Paul Martin will make the official announcement on Thursday morning, and Jean will be installed as Canada's 27th governor general on Oct. 1, according to a report by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) on Wednesday.

Jean, 48, will be the youngest person to ever serve as the Queen's representative in Canada.

Adrienne Clarkson, who also came to the job from CBC-Television, is stepping down in September after serving six years at Rideau Hall.

Jean, who has a six-year-old daughter with filmmaker Jean-Daniel Lafond, has worked for CBC and Radio-Canada since 1988. She is currently the host of the Newsworld documentary series, "The Passionate Eye." She has received many awards for her documentary work, including the Amnesty International Journalism Award.
