TEHRAN, Aug. 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Iran's new President
Mahmud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday called for an end to weapons of mass destruction
(WMD) in the world.
Ahmadinajad made the call in a speech delivered soon after receiving the warrant from Supreme Leader Seyed Ali
Khamenei at a ceremony in central Tehran, attended by top Iranian officials and
foreign ambassadors.
"I will plea for the dismantle of all weapons of mass
destruction. Iran wants to see the establishment of lasting peace and justice,"
Ahmadinejad said.
He said the elimination was an essential step toward
the " justice in global arena", stressing "justice is the foundation for
international relation. To reach this goal, we must dismantle weapons of mass
destruction."
The new president vowed that his government would
work for justice, prosperity of the Iranian people and devotion to Islam.
The ultra-conservative former Tehran mayor came into
power at the juncture that Iran's nuclear issue was pushed unprecedentedly close
to a crisis by Tehran's substantial steps toward resumption of its uranium
conversion activities.
Just one day before his inauguration, the Europe
Union and the United States issued a tough warning to Tehran over its threatened
restart of a nuclear fuel conversion facility, saying they would refer Iran's
nuclear case to the UN Security Council if Tehran takes the action.
Iran on Monday announced that it would remove seals
on the uranium conversion facility in central city of Isfahan under the
supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Meanwhile, the new president is facing another
challenge, the stagnant economy.
He gained enthusiastic support from the poor of the
country with the slogan of "economic justice", on which he vowed to make the
economy robust and reallocate the national wealth, especially the
money-incurring oil.
Therefore, he has been expected to narrow the gap
between the rich and the poor and to decrease the unemployment, which is said to
be soaring around 16 percent according to the official statistics but has been
doubled by some unofficial estimates. Enditem
