KHARTOUM, Aug. 2 (Xinhuanet) -- Northern and southern Sudanese attacked each other on Khartoum's outskirts Tuesday, in the second day of clashes after the death of Vice President John Garang.

    The clashes happened in different places on the outskirts of the capital, witnesses said.

    In a slum 10 km south of Khartoum, northern and southern residents clashed in the streets.

    Witnesses said police entered the areas shortly and several jets could be seen hovering above.

    A total of 46 people were killed in the capital after the death of Garang, police said. But it was not clear if the figure included new victims from Tuesday's clashes.

    Garang, who for more than two decades headed the south-based rebel Sudanese People's Liberation Movement, died in a helicopter crash over the weekend.

    He signed a power-sharing peace deal with the Khartoum government in January, ending a 21-year civil war in the country and leading to his swearing in as Sudan's first vice president just three weeks ago. Enditem
