Palestinian police ready to take control after Israeli pullout
www.chinaview.cn 2005-08-01 19:41:16

GAZA, Aug. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- Palestinian police chief Alla Hosni said on Monday that his policemen were ready to take security control of the territories Israel is to evacuate later this month.

Hosni said at a press conference held in Gaza that the Palestinian security apparatuses had finalized all the preparation work for the takeover after the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and part of the northern West Bank.

In addition, Hosni said the Palestinian police had received 100 armored vehicles, 50 motorcycles and security equipment including X-ray doors offered by Spain.

The police chief said more donations were expected from European countries to help the ill-equipped Palestinian police to keep calmduring and after the Israeli pullout.

But he refrained from naming the European countries or any other details.

Hosni also rebuked Israel for not allowing the Palestinian police to be armed.

Israel is to pull out from all the 21 settlements in Gaza and four in the northern West Bank from mid August.

The Palestinian side has devised a detailed plan for maintaining calm during the withdrawal, but said the shortage of weapons for its security forces would hinder efforts to carry out the plan.

The Palestinian National Authority has called upon the international community to help arm the security forces, but Israel repeatedly refused it, fearing the weapons could be used against Israeli targets.  Enditem
