KABUL, Aug. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- A convoy of the United Nations was ambushed in Afghan southern province of Helmand on Sunday, in which two persons were injured, a UN spokesperson said Monday.

The ambush happened in Sangin district of Helmand, and a driver for the UN Population Fund and a policeman of the convoy were injured, UN spokesperson Adrian Edwards said.

He did not mention who was responsible for the attack, but the ousted Taliban militants have carried out many attacks against Afghan and foreign forces especially in the southern Afghan provinces like Helmand, Kandahar and Uruzgan.

Remnants of Taliban, whose regime was ousted in late 2001, havevowed to destroy the upcoming first parliamentary elections in September and to continue Jihad or holy war till the withdrawal ofUS-led foreign troops from the post-Taliban central Asian state.

More than 400 people, including rebels, Afghan and US troops aswell as civilians had been killed in the Taliban staged new surge of attacks since early spring. Enditem
