LIMA, July 31 (Xinhuanet) -- Ousted Ecuadoran President Lucio Gutierrez said Sunday that he will not seek political asylum in Peru where he has been as a tourist since July 23.

"I am thankful for the attentions from the Peruvian people. I feel at home. But it is not part of my plans to request asylum," he said in an interview with the Peruvian radio. "I want to face justice in my country to show the crimes of which I am accused are false."

"I wish to return to Ecuador as soon as possible, and I expect that the judge closes the case, because the accusations are absurd," said Gutierrez.

"What I want to do is to clean my name, and then reach the goal of calling general elections and a National Constitutional Assembly to carry on with the political reform," he said.

Gutierrez was removed from office by his country's congress on April 20 for "dereliction of duty" amid violent protests in Quito, the country's capital.

The ousted president first sought asylum in Brazil and then went to the United States. He and is now in the Tumbes department of Peru near the Ecuadoran border. Enditem
