BRUSSELS, July 31 (Xinhuanet) -- Wim Duisenberg, who oversaw the introduction of
the euro as the first president of the European Central Bank (ECB), died
Sunday at the age of 70.
According to Dutch TV reports monitored here, Mr Duisenberg was found dead in
the swimming pool of his villa in Faucon, in south-eastern France. The cause of
Duisenberg's death wasn't immediately known,
A former Dutch finance minister and head of the Dutch central bank,
Duisenberg was responsible for the introduction of euro notes and coins in 2002.
Between 1998 and 2003, Duisenberg served as the first president of the European
Central Bank. He held the post of president of the Netherlands Bank
between 1982 and 1997. Enditem
