MONTREAL, July 29 (Xinhuanet) -- The Hungarian women's water polo team won its second world championship title here on Friday, beating the United States 10-7.
Hungary led the game 7-3 at halftime. However, the strong-minded U.S. team, aiming to defend its world title, launched waves of counter attacks and catched up to 7-7 tie with 3:36 to go.
After several unregistered go-arounds, Hungary had to carry on the combat against the United States in extra-time game.
Tomaskovics and Valkay's goals made Hungary lead again at 9-7. Then, Valkay's cross past the ball to Dravucz and the later bounced the ball in to seal the victory for the world champion in Rome 1994.
"I still cannot believe it. I think I need a few hours to realize what happened," said Hungary's Aniko Pelle. "It was very tough, they played a strong defense. It was very tough to move, it shows how tough we are that we were able to come back in the end."
In the bronze medal match, the host team Canada crushed Russia 8-3 and gained their third medal of World Championships in the history.
The Canadian team was the runner-up in Perth 1991 and grabbed the bronze in Fukuoka 2001. Enditem |
