NEW DELHI, July 29 (Xinhuanet) -- The death roll rose
to 700 in west India's Maharashtra that has been hit by torrential rains inthe
past four days, local media reported.
NDTV reported the casualties in
the Pradesh capital Mumbai alone has increased to 370 and the number will keep
growing when rescue work is going on.
Life in Mumbai has been coming back to normality as
the weatheris becoming mild. The city's airport has reopened with the first
flight taking off Thursday afternoon.
But quite a few city streets are still flooded with
knee-deep water and several suburb residence areas still run out of power while
the city's drain system are not working well.
In a slum in Saki Naka in the northern part of the
city rescuers dug out 67 bodies and are trying to find more of the estimated 200
people trapped under a landslide.
Meanwhile, rescuers were still working to recover the
bodies of an estimated 100 people buried under an avalanche of mud in the
village of Juigaon, 150 km south of Bombay.
Rumors that a lake dam will burst had triggered a
stampede lastnight in a slum in the northern city, which showed the tension in
the city. Eighteen people were killed in the accident.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, visiting Mumbai on
Thursday, announced a 5 billion rupee aid package for relief work but officials
here said it will need at least 10 billion rupees to repair damaged roads, rail
and other infrastructure.
The torrential rain, said to be the most serious in
the past 100 years, has caused a standstill in Mumbai in the past four days. And
several regions of Maharashtra are still facing heavy rain and landslides.
