Monsoon rains in India kill 300, 150 missing

NEW DELHI, July 28 (Xinhuanet) -- The devastating incessant rains that wreaked havoc in India's western state of Maharashtra have left some 300 people dead and another 150 missing.

"Three hundred people have died and 150 are missing due to the record-breaking rains in the state," a Maharashtra government official told Xinhua over phone Thursday.

In the state capital and the country's financial hub Mumbai alone, 46 people, including 36 people in metropolis suburb Andheri, were killed due to landslides.

The unprecedented rains since Tuesday, not witnessed in the last 100 years, brought the life in Mumbai almost to a standstill.

The rainfall recorded in Mumbai on Wednesday was higher than that received by Cherapunji in India's Eastern Meghalya state, which is known for highest rainfall in the country, metrological official informed.

Record rainfall exceeding 944 millimeters caused low-lying areas of the metropolis to be flooded and washed away the railway tracks in Western and Central Railways.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is to visit the State on Thursday to take stock of the situation.

The state government has already deployed the army, navy and air force personnel to deal with the unprecedented floods in the state, and to help in relief work, particularly in air-dropping food packets to stranded people. Enditem
