BEIJING, July 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Leaders of international groups and countries
Wednesday condemned the assassination of two Algerian diplomats by al-Qaida's
wing in Iraq.
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan told reporters in New York, "I cannot but
condemn this senseless and brutal killing of innocent diplomats."
The killings, confirmed earlier on Wednesday by Algerian government, also
drew denouncement from the European Union (EU).
"Such acts cannot bring closer a better future for Iraq. Only democratic
solutions will bring justice for all Iraq's communities," said EU External
Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner in a statement.
"Perpetrators of this type of unjustified actions must understand that they
will not deter the international community from supporting the Iraqis and from
deepening our ties with them,"she added.
Meanwhile, Arab League (AL) Secretary General Amr Moussa expressed his
grief and shock on such a terrorist operation against the Algerian diplomats who
were undertaking their duty in Iraq, Egypt's MENA news agency reported.
The AL chief expressed his condolences to the Algerian people and
government over the death of the two diplomats.
Confirming the decease of the diplomats, Algeria's PresidentialOffice said
the action was "odious and cowardly."
Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika said Wednesday in a statement that
"these cowardly hostage-takers have assassinated our two representatives in
Baghdad" as the Algerian government is doing its utmost to seek their release.
Bouteflika said Algeria strongly condemns the "barbarous act" to kill the
envoys from a nation that is friendly to the Iraqi people and demands to bring
the murderers to justice.
The al-Qaida's wing in Iraq Wednesday posted a statement on internet,
saying it had killed two Algerian diplomats kidnapped inBaghdad.
On Tuesday, the group released a video of the two kidnapped Algerian
diplomats on Internet, hours after it vowed to kill them.
The video showed two blindfolded men, one of them identified himself as Ali
Bila'aroussi, aged 62, while the other said he was Azzedine bin Fadi, 47.
Gunmen abducted the two diplomats along with their driver as they were
leaving the embassy in Baghdad's western al-Mansur district by car on July 21.
The al-Qaida Organization in the Land of Two Rivers claimed responsibility
for the abduction two days later.
Algeria withdrew all of its diplomats from Baghdad on Monday. Enditem
