LONDON, July 26 (Xinhuanet) -- British Prime Minister
Tony Blair vowed on Tuesday that his government would not give in to terrorism.
"We should not give one inch to terrorists. We must
confront terrorists on every level and not let terrorists excuse what they do,"
Blair said at his monthly press conference.
Blair insisted that his decision to go to war in Iraq
offered no justification for militants' actions. "There is no justification for
what they do," he said.
Iraq is just an excuse to terrorists and the roots of
terrorismgo much deeper than Iraq or Afghanistan, said the prime minister.
Earlier in the day, Blair held talks with opposition
leaders ofthe Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrats to discuss strategies
for combating terrorism in the aftermath of the London bomb attacks this month.
The meeting had been "productive" in working out
measures clamping down on terror, said Blair, adding that more young Muslims
must be recruited into the police force to ensure an integrated,multi-cultural
and multi-religious society.
Opposition party leaders emerged from the talks
saying they were united in their determination to tackle terrorism.
"There's a great desire at a time when the country
faces such great danger to work together," said Michael Howard, leader of the
Conservatives.
He noted the prime minister was seriously considering
allowing the use of "phone tap" evidence in courts, the British Broadcasting
Corporation (BBC) reported.
Meanwhile, the police continued their hunt for the
men behind Thursday's failed bomb attacks following Monday's announcement of the
names of two bomb suspects. Enditem |
