LONDON, July 25 (Xinhuanet) -- British Foreign Secretary Jack Strawexpressed "profound regret" over the death of a Brazilian man shotmistakenly by the police last Friday.

    He offered his "condolences to family, to the Brazilian government and people" over the loss at a joint press briefing with his Brazilian counterpart Celso Amorim Monday evening.

    Straw also expressed his gratitude to the Brazilian government for its support over the years for fighting terrorism.

    Amorim who was here for a G4 meeting on the reform of the United Nations expressed the perplexity and concern of his people,adding that it's "important" to know the "reasons for the errors."

    However, he noted the "positive reaction" from the British government on the incident and urged that "guilty people should be punished" while "financial compensation" to the family is "important" as the parents are "humble and aged".

    Straw admitted that "combating terrorism should be done with full respect to human rights", adding the Independent Police Complaints Commission will carry out full and thorough investigation into the case.

    "The suicide bombing and random killing in UK has changed the context of policing," said Straw, reassuring that the current system of independent investigation of complaints in the UK "is the most thorough and most independent of the world."

    It was revealed Monday that the 27-year-old Brazilian, Jean Charles de Menezes, who has been working legally in UK for three yeas after leaving Brazil, had been shot eight times by plain-clothes policemen last Friday in Stockwell Tube Station.

    While arrangements are being made to ensure the return of Menezes' body to Brazil, his family are considering suing the police for killing the innocent man. Enditem
