US Attorney General denies failure of Bush's fight against Al-Qaida

BEIJING, July 25 -- US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said on Sunday that the recent terrorist attacks in London and Egypt should not negate the successes against terrorism in the past three years.

Speaking on CBS's "Face the Nation" program, Gonzales denied that the recent attacks showed the failure of US President George W Bush's administration to prevent al-Qaida from continuing to commit attacks against Western targets.

"Well, it's certainly difficult to protect democracies and open societies, and that is one of the challenges that we have to deal with.

But the fact that we have had these two attacks in the past two weeks shouldn't negate the successes that we have enjoyed in the past three years, and before that, so we have made a lot of good effort."

Gonzales said it was too early to tell whether it was Osama bin Laden himself who was behind these attacks, and that the US authorities were cooperating with Britain and Egypt on the investigations into the bombings and in trying to prevent another attack. Enditem
