LONDON, July 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Britain's Metropolitan Police chief apologized on Sunday to the family of Jean Charles de Menezes, the innocent Brazilian man who was shot dead at Stockwell Station last Friday in the hot pursuit of the London bombing suspects.

"This is a tragedy. The Metropolitan Police accepts full responsibility for this. To the family I can only express my deep regrets," Sir Ian Blair, Metropolitan Police Commissioner told on the Sky News.

Blair admitted that further people could be shot as detectives hunt down the would-be suicide bombers.

"Somebody else could be shot. But everything is done to make it right. This is a terrifying set of circumstances for individuals to make decisions," he added.

The Brazilian foreign ministry has demanded an explanation for the shooting of the 27-year-old electrician whom police had mistaken for a suicide bomber of last Thursday's bombings.

A statement from Sao Paulo said: "The government expects the British authorities to explain the circumstances that led to this tragedy."

It added their citizen was "apparently the victim of a lamentable mistake".

The Metropolitan Police said an inquest would be opened and adjourned into his death, which they described as a "tragedy".

Menezes was killed by armed plain-clothes police officers on Friday as he tried to board an underground train at Stockwell, south London. Enditem
