US to work with Lebanese govt, but not Hezbollah

WASHINGTON, July 20 (Xinhuanet) -- The US State Department said on Wednesday that it will work with Lebanon's new government, but not with any Hezbollah member named to the cabinet.

"Hezbollah is a terrorist organization," deputy spokesman of the department Adam Ereli said at a news briefing.

"Obviously, we are going to have to operate within the constraints of our law," Ereli said.

On the formation of new Lebanese cabinet, Ereli said, "That's something we should see as a positive development."

Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Fouad Seniora announced Tuesday the formation of a 24-member new cabinet as Hezbollah won a ministerial post for the first time in the country.

Saniora said in Beirut that it was "an excellent thing" for Hezbollah to be in the government. "This is very natural. They arepart of this country and consequently they have a right to have representatives in this government."

Hezbollah, which is supported by Syria and Iran, has been fighting a cross-border guerrilla war with Israel.

Ereli hedged on whether having a Hezbollah member in the Lebanese cabinet would affect US support for reform in Lebanon. "I think it's a little bit too soon to tell," Ereli said. Enditem
