More Filipino favor step-down of Arroyo: survey

MANILA, July 19 (Xinhuanet) -- More than half of Filipinos favoredthe step-down of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo through resignation, impeachment and even unconstitutional means, a survey released Tuesday said.

The survey conducted by the polling body, Pulse Asia, from June 20 to 23 nationwide showed that about 61 percent of Filipinos agreed to the opposition on the call for President Arroyo's step-down.

Only 22 percent of some 1,200 respondents believe Arroyo should be given a chance to complete her term despite allegations that she committed fraud in the 2004 presidential election.

The survey also found that 28 percent believed "the most constructive political scenario" to end the crisis would be resulted from Arroyo's handing over power to constitutional successor Vice President Noli de Castro, while 22 percent said that the most destructive scenario would be brought by the military takeover or Arroyo's remaining in power.

About 13 percent said that she should be removed "using any means whether constitutional or unconstitutional," the survey showed.

President Arroyo earlier insisted that she would not resign and would win back the public trust and support through immediate reform and good governance. Enditem
