London bombers had no link to Islam, says Karzai

LONDON, July 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Visiting Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Tuesday that terrorists such as the London bombers had no link to Islam.

At a joint news conference after talks with British Prime Minister Tony Blair in London, Karzai said the violence in Afghanistan and the UK was "not related to Islam".

"These people, the terrorists, are only after human life ... They feel happy when they cause suffering -- when they cause suffering in Afghanistan, when they cause suffering in Britain, when they cause suffering elsewhere," he said.

He said Afghans shared the suffering of people in London following the suicide bombings which killed more than 50 people onJuly 7.

"We in Afghanistan can feel that pain perhaps better than any other country," he said.

Blair said London's bombers and others used Iraq and Afghanistan as an excuse, and he denied again that the invasion of Iraq had made Britain a target of terrorists.

"Of course, these terrorists will use Iraq as an excuse, or use Afghanistan," Blair said.

"September 11, of course, happened before both of those things and then the excuse was American policy, or Israel," he said.

"They will always have their reasons for acting," he said.

"But we've got to be very careful of almost giving in to the sort of perverted and twisted logic with which they argue," Blair warned.

At the bilateral meeting, Blair and Karzai had signed an agreement to provide "an enduring relationship" between the two countries for the next 10 years.

Blair said both governments recognized that "considerable commitment by the international community was required to assist the efforts being made by the people of Afghanistan to build theirfuture."

On Monday, Karzai arrived in London for a two-day visit. He is also meeting with the Queen during his visit, and He will deliver a speech at Chatham House titled "Global Terrorism and the experience of Afghanistan" and address Parliamentarians at the Palace of Westminster. Enditem
