NEW DELHI, July 19 (Xinhuanet) -- India on Tuesday accused Pakistan of violating twice the 20-month old cease-fire in Poonch sector of Indian-controlled Kashmir, after a man treaded across the line of control from Pakistani side on Monday.
Earlier, on Monday Pakistan had accused Indian troopers of crossing the cease-fire line and abducting one of its citizens from the Pakistan-Administered Kashmir. However, India rejected the charge.
The man was repatriated on Tuesday by the Indian army in the same region in Kashmir, PTI quoted Defense Ministry sources as saying.
"Pakistan army resorted to unprovoked firing twice yesterday --once at 1200 noon and then 1345 hours. Indian troops did not retaliate," the source said.
Indian Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) Lt. Gen. J. S. Lidder rang up his Pakistani counterpart and informed him that the man who had treaded into Indian-controlled Kashmir would be repatriated today. The actual handing over was carried out at 1300 hours," the PTI report said.
They said the repatriation was done as a goodwill gesture and also after the man was found to be having no terrorist link.
Kashmir has been the major stand-off point between India and Pakistan. The two south Asian nuclear neighbors also fought two ofthe three wars over Kashmir issue.
For the past 16 years, Indian-controlled Kashmir is facing a guerrilla war, when in 1989 hundreds of youth in the region took up to arms, demanding freedom from Indian rule in the region. Enditem |
